UTILA: The Best Kept Secret In The Caribbean
Think about the perfect remote island: powdery white sands, deserted beaches, and coconut trees swaying gently in the Caribbean breeze. There are few places that can rival Utila.
Measuring at only about 13 km long and 5 km wide, it is the smallest of Honduras’s Bay Islands. It has been one of the best-kept secrets–except among divers. This tiny island boasts some of the best diving locations in the world. Picture perfect spots are even found near to the coastline itself. Within its reefs, sea life of the most curious shapes in a rainbow of colors can be found.
Utila is renown for having some of the biggest sea life in the entire Caribbean. And if you are lucky, you may even get to see the almighty whale shark. According to the Guinness Book of Animal Facts and Feats, the largest confirmed whale shark had a length of 41.5 ft. and a weight of about 47,000 lb! And all of this at arguably one of the cheapest places to go diving in the world!
Still not convinced? Not only does Utila offer unspoiled seas but it also offers perfect privacy and isolation (if you want). A lot of the island still remains an adventure of exotic wilderness and wildlife waiting to be explored. You can wander onto deserted beaches that look like they have leaped straight from a postcard. Or if you fancy something a bit more lively, just wander into Utila Town where you are guaranteed Caribbean hospitality with a host of restaurants, bars, and music.
In recent times, the number of visitors soared as cruises ships started to make stops at this little slice of heaven.
John Wright, vice president of MCGB Properties, and the team have been involved with Utila for almost twenty years. He is lucky to be living the dream life where he gets to live between his hometown in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and this paradise island.
He explained how much easier it is to get to Utila these days than in years gone by. “Utila is no longer the best-kept secret. It is part of the Bay Islands and there are now many cruise ship passengers, and many international charters and flights arriving daily.”
John was not surprised with the sudden rise in its popularity. MCGB’s team has construction management experience in this area for over twenty-five years. They have completed many projects in every sector on the island, such as: marina developments with sea fronts views; custom homes and villas; dive shops; commercial buildings, to name a few.
Utila is on par with the dream destinations like Cayman, Turks, Aruba and Barbados but at a fraction of the price. It comes as no shock with the rise in the number of people who fell so in love with the island that they simply came, and never left. “Residency is guaranteed for homeowners from friendly nations, so it’s easy,” he said. “Not to mention that Utila is still one of the most affordable as most of the other islands have increased by as much as 1000% over the past decade.”
John is adamant a trip to Utila appeals to all demographics – not just divers. “Anyone, who enjoys the Caribbean in its truest form – that quiet, laid back vibe, will feel at home here. There is diving, fishing, sun tanning, great food, nightlife–everything you would expect from a Caribbean destination island.”
Another major attraction is the festival Sunjam, one of the biggest and most recognized music event in Central America that happens every August. Something certainly not to be missed!
Tropical sunsets on isolated beaches while sipping a Pina Colada out of a coconut on what could essentially feel like your own private island – is there more to life? Utila is the next must see destination that should be put on everyone’s bucket list!
